In May, 2012, I started a Meetup Group here in Lexington, KY by the same name as this blog:  "Let Your Food Be Your Medicine."  Having been a Registered Nurse for the past 26 years, I have taken care of a lot of very sick and dying patients.  I have seen patients in home care struck by the dilemma of whether they could afford their food OR their medicine, but could not afford both.  This is absolutely wrong!

Hippocrates, the "Father" of modern medicine, had it right 400 years B.C. and since that time, our society has bought the lie that we need a pill to "fix" everything.  Our Creator did not design us as broken individuals.  Our modern diets have deteriorated to a slurry of man-made chemicals we wouldn't even recognize in a recipe.  Take out your cookbooks & blow off the dust.....do you see a recipe calling for high fructose corn syrup, propylene glycol, Red Dye # (fill in the blank), MSG, textured vegetable protein, artificial flavoring (choose your processed food product and read for yourself)....just to name a few examples, genetically modified corn, etc. 

Convenience, lack of planning for the daily fuel we put in our body's (Yes, food IS supposed to be "fuel"), and a cavalier attitude about nutrition is destroying our health.  Nothing good can happen for your health by eating foods purchased at a drive thru fast food restaurant!

You may not realize it, but MOST diseases are actually caused by inflammation.  Those last letters "itis" mean inflammation.  Think about it: 
  • arthritis
  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • colitis
  • cholecystitis
  • bronchitis
  • endocarditis
  • sinusitis
  • cellulitis
  • IBD or inflammatory bowel disease
  •  and the list goes on and on
The foods we eat actually cause inflammation.  When your doctor orders a lab called C-Reactive Protein (CRP for short), this lab value will show the amount of inflammation in your body. 

Since this is my blog, I get to the opportunity to share my own personal experience:
I have experienced the misery of constant pain of inflammation with osteoarthritis in both knees, rotator cuff surgery, and far too many years of being constantly on my feet as a nurse (26 years now and still counting). 
I used to buy those 250 count bottles of ibuprofen and 8-hour, arthritis strength acetaminophen but STILL I was in pain.
